First made over 2000 years ago in Ancient Rome, the Roman Blind was a device invented out of pure necessity, and the concept remains the same over 2 millenia later. Originally introduced during the construction of the Colosseum, they hoped to solve the problem where dust was constantly kicked up from horses and carriages, and masonry remnants from the construction were strewn everywhere.
Due to the inconvenience the dust caused when citizens had windows open, they would hang a damp piece of cloth from the windows in the hope this would keep the dust out. The cloth also had other benefits too, the Romans soon realised that this damp cloth was helping to shield them from the hot and humid mediterranean atmosphere, keeping their homes shaded and ultimately cooler.
The Romans soon began using elaborate designs on these cloths, turning them from a simple household appliance into a beautiful and decorative furnishing for their house. The idea became widespread across the entire Roman empire.
The designs have changed over time, whilst today’s Roman blinds operate vertically, the Romans made their blinds fold back horizontally, and away from the wall/window, but the general concepts have remained the same.
